The traditions and flavors of Mexico sparkle in this sophisticated but relaxed restaurant. The Rainey Street District has experienced loud growing pains over the years, but as the hotels in the area open, visitors to Austin will have a front row seat for the best Mexican food in town.

Chef Iliana de la Vega owned a restaurant in Oaxaca before moving to Austin with her husband about a decade ago, and she pays tribute to one of the region’s culinary calling cards with several sensational moles. The familiar mole negro de Oaxaca builds depth with dozens of ingredients, including almonds, pecans, peanuts and chocolate, while the bright mole amarillo de Oaxaca that surrounds crunchy green beans and chayotes sings with chilies and tomatillos.

Pastel Azteca, a squat tower of corn tortillas layered with spinach, almond, raisin and goat cheese draped in a mild tomato chipotle sauce; and vibrant yellowtail ceviche splashed with citrus and herbs highlight the sharable offerings.
